Beta-lactams are a broad class of antibiotics. These include penicillin derivatives, cephalosporins, monobactams, and carbapenems. They have a broad spectrum of activity and are used extensively in medical and agricultural settings. However, excessive residues in feed can harm human health, resulting in drug-resistant pathogens. For this reason, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Union have set maximum residue limits for b-lactam antibiotics in feed.

A beta-lactam test kit is a rapid and convenient method for determining the presence of beta-lactams in milk. The test kit consists of two easy-to-use components: dipsticks and a strip reader. A lyophilized receptors-gold conjugate is included in the kit for rapid detection. The dipsticks are used to identify the presence of beta-lactams in raw milk.
